The Betel (Piper betle) isthe leaf of a vine belonging to the Piper Betle, trunk (vine) is joint which has link and root which use to find nutrients in soil and roots stick with joint of trunk. Leaf is monocots in egg form and heart shape by the sharp edge of leaf. Has it own pungent smell, flower color is white divide to short panicles in different sex, male panicle and female panicle.

Birth place was in South Asia, South East Asia and Southern of China, Varieties that can be found in Thailand are, Chinese Betel, Yellow Betel, Green Betel and Tong-Lang Betel, The epiphyte betel living on Thong-Lang tree (Erythrina fusca Lour).

พลู (Piper Betle Linn.) เป็นพืชในวงศ์พริกไทย เป็นไม้เลื้อยชนิดหนึ่ง พบทั่วไปในภูมิภาคเอเชียใต้ จนถึง เอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้  สายพันธุ์ที่พบและมีปลูกกันในประเทศไทยเช่น พลูจีน  พลูเหลือง พลูเขียว พลูทองหลาง เป็นต้น

พลูเป็นพืชที่มีรสเผ็ดร้อนนิยมนำมาทากับปูนแดงเคี้ยวร่วมกับหมาก ซึ่งเป็นที่นิยมกันมาแต่โบราณ นอกจากนี้ในทางสมุนไพรยังนิยมใช้ใบพลู เพื่อการรักษาโรคผิวหนังกันอย่างกว้างขวาง  โดยเฉพาะโรคผิวหนังที่เกิดจากเชื้อรา เช่น กลาก เกลื้อน ฮ่องกงฟุต การอักเสบจากฝี หนอง และสิวหรืออาการคันจากการแพ้ฝุ่น สารเคมี แมลงกัดต่อยหรือลมพิษ รวมทั้งโรคผิวหนังอักเสบเรื้อรัง (Chronic Dermatitis) ซึ่งแพทย์แผนไทยได้วิจัยผลการรักษาแล้วพบว่ามีประสิทธิภาพเทียบเท่ายาทาสารสตีรอยด์ สามารถใช้รักษาได้เหมือนยาทั่วไป แต่มีความปลอดภัยไร้ผลค้างเคียง
